What About Armageddon?
Hmm. Is the moon really all that old? Some say it isn't as old as we think and that the dust layers on its surface hold the clues to the notion that it may be just a passing fancy of the solar system. A meteor trap.
I don't know enough about it yet to go into detail but I do know a bit about the Islamic Armageddon principle.
One can open just about any Sura in the Quran and find reference to the End of Times or what is called "The Hour" . Here is one Sura however that discusses it a whole bunch:

I choose Pickthal as that is one of the more universally 'non Shi'i' /non 'Sunni' translations by a relatively objective outsider. All Qurans are IDENTICAL and CANONICAL in ARABIC. In English however there are vast differences in semantics and syntax. Words like KHALIFA in a Sunni translated English version are translated as "Humanity" whereas in a pure Shi'i translation that word is left simply as KHALIFA. A Khalifa is the same as a Caliph or, Ruler/Emperor but one whose main focus is regarding the safekeeping of Islam regardless of which country it is that utilizes the Islamic Code of Jurisprudence as its guide to better management of human issues be they spiritual or political or legal. The system of Khalifa seems to have died out with the Ottoman Empire did it not? Well, that is because they weren't the Khalifas mentioned in the Quran. The Khalifa mentioned in the Quran is none other than the first muslim who was born INSIDE the Kaaba, raised near the prophet (literally BY the prophet as he was younger), married the prophet's only daughter, buried the prophet and whose texts are called: Nahj al Balagha (phonetic spelling). The notion of a "Mahdi" is reflected in the continuation of his 'line' of inheritance all the way up to the twelvth "Imam" who is considered to be in "occultation" and is the Messiah whom both Xtians and Jews refer to as either Jesus or some unknown and unborn Israeli. This is really, the essence of Twelver Shi'i Islam, that they follow the 12 Khalifs who inherited the safekeeping of the Quran itself and its application. I think we can all see how horrible Islam can be when it is misapplied and we can all see now how productive it is when it is applied down to the last letter. The reason Nasrallah has been so successful in Southern Lebanon in preventing deaths of Israeli civilians while simultaneously causing massive damage to the Israeli War Machine is that he follows the Law as it is recorded and TAUGHT by the twelve Imams. It is said that Islam is the City of Knowledge and Ali Mu'mineen is the DOOR (the first Imam, the first actual muslim who was never anything else i.e. pagan, Jew, Xtian or otherwise). And it must be noted and ACCEPTED that Islam is a continuation and reflection of the other two systems (and all others headed by prophets including Zorastrianism and Buddhism).
Sura 25 discusses both The Hour and The Day. These are separate issues. The Hour is held to be a time, literally a moment in time, in which the earth will be rent asunder. Violent geophysical details are clearly described such as the utter destruction of all geological landmarks. It is also treated metaphorically in the sense that one could say the Hour is similar to the Hour of one's own death. Sudden, uncontrollable and FINAL. Everyone has their own personal Armageddon it seems and that is their own death. It marks an end to an individuals 'case study'. Like death, no one person, prophet or otherwise, knows the secret of the Hour, be it their own demise or the demise of the entire planet. NO ONE. This is reflected in ALL references to the Hour within the Quran, not just Sura 25 which is called The Criterion.
The Day, on the other hand, is not an earth bound time constrained event. It happens at the same time for all individuals whether they died seven centuries ago or seven minutes ago or, have yet to die. The constraint of TIME is discarded and all beings wake up simultaneousy and feel as if they'd but tarried an hour. To a muslim, it is best described to non muslims as Judgement Day. Many faiths including Islam confuse the two concepts, the Hour and the Day. They are not the same. This has resulted in a bit of confusion and a bit of mudslinging amongst various types of believers worldwide. It has been used to frighten people and they say crazy things regarding interpersonal and international 'judgements' of one person or people upon another. According to Islam, Judgement Day is unavoidable regardless of what faith you aspire to believe in and it is irrevocable.

This type of 'renewal' of Ideals and belief patterns is common to all things save for Islam because it has either escaped detection, been ignored or maybe, isn't OLD ENOUGH to have been applied by enough critical thinkers (in English not in other languages because I assure you, Islamic scholars study all types of man made ideologies including Marxism and Captitalism). The Quran addresses all immature systems and leaves not one of them out including Atheism. Wow, imagine Allah discussing his own "non existence". Don't find that in most common prayer books do you!
One of the very serious consequences of the failure to understand both the Hour and the Day has been that many people (Jerry Falwell for instance) use it to misconstrue violent events of weather or events like the WTC in order to cast judgement on other people because of their failure to be "moral" individuals according to various immature standards. The Quran however states that the Hour is not selective. It plays no favorites:
025.014 Pray not that day for one destruction, but pray for many destructions!
See there? No one escapes it whether it (the Hour) refers to the cessation of all life on this planet (due to whatever extremes of environment at the time like Polar Shift or Asteroid Bombardments from above) or to the death of a single individual. I think we can all agree on that and call it a Truth. No?
For me, that one verse is one of the most powerful wordings in the Quran: thabooran katheeran.

He looked at me and laughed and said, "No one knows the Hour you silly girl. No one."
And Peace isn't used for Peace anymore. It is an Ideal that is abused in order to cause war and ceasefire, to enrich oppressors. Peace my friends, isn't achieved via governments, it is achieved through individuals. Not as easy as it ought to be but definitely possible if one tries and refuses to accept propaganda and instead, uses their imagination and their reason. How sad it is that some folks think my "imagination" ought to be obliterated or the imagination of a group of people in South Lebanon who truly believe and truly act to fight hypocrisy risking their reputation, their property, and their lives.

Weather Report
No Armageddon today. Tomorrow. Talk about the moon and moon dust and Hubble telescopes.
Today is for shopping. My daughter, who has plagued me with plans to return to the Gulf (or thereabouts) in order to hang out with someone she hopes to marry....oh...I didn't want her to go alone into that war.
I realized three days ago that it is impossible to convince a young woman of the dangers when she is in love.
Impossible. So I let it go to the Creator, as we did in Turkey once many years ago.... we had become lost one afternoon in the rain while trying to get out of the maze called Constantinople and back then, all at once, when we let it go we bumped into a man who took us out of that city and took us to a point where he stated, "You'll have no problems after this point." And we didn't, we made it to Izmir during a violent rain at three a.m......I just let it go and we decided to let her go back into the war and seek her destiny regardless of what the risks are to a good young woman's soul and her body. We didn't inform her (my husband and I) of our decision to turn her loose to destiny, single and vulnerable as she is....
And whaddya know!
Within twelve hours she came to us and informed us that she was going to get married to Sami. Sami. Poor young man. He was imprisoned for four days during this itty bitty ordeal Israel has foist upon the Free Country to their north called Lebanon. He was imprisoned and beaten, blindfolded and handcuffed. The best part though is that he reported that his interrogators forced him to "pick up soggy potatoes". Why was he imprisoned for four days? Easy. The citizens of Lebanon were rounding up Mossad agents and they thought he was one. Nice story, nice ending. The best part is the part when I told her that we were going to set her free anyway to seek what it is a person must find all by themself.
So we are going to Tucson to buy her trousseau. And, a nice trunk. Samsonite or maybe something even more fine.

Ideals Called Peace and Called Armageddon
I'm relatively certain we all understand the notion of an "ideal". A Nietschze based euphemism for a pagan idol. Therefore, I won't delve into further definition of that truth exposed by that truly great 'philosopher' which is best described by me to anyone who reads here as a 'secular theologian' as opposed to Hawking who is a 'scientific theologian'.
Poets in general, are and ought to be concerned with both Peace and Armageddon as ideals that they address in their work, absolutely. Other concepts which are not ideals are also of importance or ought to be, to poets and theologians, are those of Time and Death. What many people don't know is that most modern Shi'i theologians are also poets. One of my favorite Shi'i theologians and poet is Sheihk Fadallah, a Lebanese Shi'i. Mr. Fadallah was the target of a Mossad assassination attempt in the 1980s due to the depth of his understanding of the problem revolving around the idea of Judaism versus Zionism and his willingness to address it publicly. In that assassination attempt, the Mossad managed to kill nearly or perhaps it was more than, eighty innocent bystanders, completely missing their target. We can all see how impotent they are when it comes to the Shi'i.

Time and Death are not ideals, they are constraints imposed on this existence by the creator. They are not ideals, they are 'relative' facts.
Peace, on the other hand, is not a constraint nor a fact nor a 'constant' even. Peace is an Ideal. Peace, as in Pacifism, is a notion thrust upon us by those who wish to oppress us by exploiting the innate goodness in almost all individuals. Perhaps there are some individuals who lack this variable, that of 'goodness' i.e. the psychopathic killer Jeffrey Dahmer. Peace, in a world composed of how many billions of weapons weilding and selling individuals, is impossible however, it is imposed on humans as if they ought to be able to achieve it when in fact, those imposing it upon them are the same individuals who profit from the techniques of war and by deduction, the 'peacetimes' that are the inevitable outcome of things such as ceasefires and treaties. By extension, in this generation of humanity, Democracy is used to impose constraints on the freedom of indigenous populations by the dominant culture, the Western and it is called Peace. Statistics favorable to the support of such ideals are sought after and all other indications that it is a failed human strategy and ideology are neglected. As it most recently has been in Palestine when the 'democratically' elected leaders were forced into prison and exile.
From Sura Al Baqra or The Cow:
2.9 They (who profess belief with the tongue only) pretend to Allah and to the believers the contrary of what they have in their minds; (By doing so) they deceive none but themselves but they perceive it not.
2.10 Their mental faculties are distempered and disordered. Allah worsened their pathological condition (according to His Laws) and they will suffer a distressful retribution because of the chronic conflict between what they assert and what is deep down in their minds.
2.11 And when it is said to them, “Do not cause corruption or disorder in the land [or do not make mischief and disrupt peace, order and balance of the society and the world]”, they say, “We are but reformers [redressing the systems and setting things right.
For a muslim, peace isn't about the absence of WAR. Peace is the notion of submission to the laws of Allah and by extension, Allah's creation, the universe. Peace is the willingness to face judgement on Judgement Day regarding one's actions and those do include actions associated with war times. Where non muslims refer to the failed Geneva Conventions, muslims refer to the Quran.
Armageddon. Now what exactly is that myth! Is it a myth? No one knows really but it has been used to exploit the above concepts to convince so many people worldwide that they are engaged in various modern conflicts tailor made by the creator to end life as we know it.

Israel's Special Valentine
Let's talk about something here non religious. Lets talk politics for a change. I know my faith but I know those without faith are bothered by talk of a Creator. Not surprising. You know, I met a man a few months ago (the poem We Saw the World, Stayed in the Best Hotels) who didn't believe in God until a month later when his wife was diagnosed with lung cancer. She has since died in England. When I reminded him of his words just a month before (he believed in Scientology pre-lung CA) he became quite upset. I mean, if you can't ask God for help then who can you ask when the governments of the world are hypocrits and public liars? This war would have killed her (Liz) anyway because she was IN LOVE with Lebanon and the Lebanese people and culture which is so rich, so passionate and wow, so pluralistic.
The country which has been murdered, maimed and will be paralysed for at least a decade. This ethnic cleansing is the long term kind that the US and Zionists specialize in...devastating homes and not just infrastructure. Laying down bombs made of depleted uranium KNOWN to cause serious birth defects and testicular cancers. Ask any Gulf War vet...ask my friend Steve who served there and got the dreaded and sperm killing disease.

The Assassination on February 14, 2004 (the Lebanese LOVE Valentine's Day and what exactly was the symbolism implied in the selection of that date?)...the assassination of Rafik Hariri. Mr. Hariri supposedly 'single handedly' rebuilt Lebanon. What he did was not only incredible but it is not matched in any country including war torn Kosovo or Vietnam. BUT. A very big BUT here. Hariri could not have managed that immense project without first having Lebanon FREE FROM ISRAELI OCCUPATION. The Israeli Occupation ended by our man of the hour, Sayyed Nasrallah a few years back via man to man combat with IDF UNIFORMED militia and terrorists (the IDF is a UNIFORMED TERRORIST ORGANIZATION). Hariri would have been unable to elicit the foreign investment or loans in a country already sinking under the weight of so much foreign debt that the government could barely keep the electricity on even in the best of times if it weren't for Nasrallah's victory over Israel. Nor could they rebuild the infrastructure damaged by so many years of Civil War which was a DIRECT RESULT of Israel's brutal campaign against the Palestinians whom they chased into other territories during the French/British mandates. Some of those people who tried to escape the horrors of the 1947 campaigns of Israeli terror didn't make it and were shot as they ran but thousands upon thousands made it into Lebanese territory only to find that they couldn't return to their homes that Israel terrorized them out of. And now Israel terrorizes the Southern Lebanese in the EXACT SAME PATTERN. They were shot as they exited mosques (the Lebanese are shot in ambulances and when in their beds and when they are running and Israel calls them "mistakes" and "accidents" and "human shields" and "terrorists". There were also eye witness reports of Israeli war crimes then (the 400 villages, see Acre http://www.palestine-encyclopedia.com/EPP/Chapter11_2of7.htm) including the rape of women and children. All true but denied by Israel ad nauseum. It is pointless to keep covering this history up. The Arabs have a reason for despising Israel. Israel is a country filled with people who torture, who imprison non Jews without charging them and expect the people that they oppress to RESPECT them and PROTECT JEWISH DIGNITY.
Back to Hariri and who exactly investigated the assassination? The UN. The same UN that is standing by lamely as Israel goes on an insane killing spree. Insane isn't even the word for it anymore. It is intentional. It is partial ethnic cleansing and even if this stops now there will be more. Israel ALWAYS comes back for more blood. They come back to steal more land. They are shocked that they couldn't get in now nor could they, since the mysterious Valentine's Day murder of Rafic Hariri, provoke the pluralistic Lebanese to attack each other.
So who killed Hariri and why? I'll tell you what I think. It wasn't Syria. Syria had nothing to gain and was heavily invested in Lebanon plus, they were ALREADY moving out. I ought to know as they used to be in my neighborhood and had already mobilized into the Bekaa and were on their way home, their occupation was at its end. And please, the world needs to stop pretending that the Zionists do not hold the lion's share of influence in the United States of America. They've frightened people from telling the truth. The hypocrisy of telling the Syrians that they used "undo influence" on Lebanon is ridiculous. Lebanon SURVIVES ON FOREIGN INVESTMENT. Afterall, tomatoes are not traded on Wall Street.
Why was Hariri killed? Easy. It was to overthrow Nasrallah, the true popular leader of Lebanon who is now more popular than ever and will remain so until they also manage to kill him. He has already informed them however that he has a chain of advisors and that no one should mourn too long over his eventual and very likely demise by assassination via Israel and it's minions, the US and all the rest who have helped these monsters kill innocents for over half a century.
Hariri was killed to overthrow a popular leader PSYCHOLOGICALLY.
