For Whom the Central School Bell Tolls

So, before WWII was even halfway over, the Reader's Digest announced that six million Jews would be dead and a "phantom" by the end of the war. Now that is just too crazy eh? What a premonition don't you think!? Is it any wonder that Israel is such a desperate nation and people?

Anyways, I finally met Alice Notley. She read my favorite poem One of the Longest Times just as one of my very dear Laundry Hill siblings is going to go in for a bit of non elective and perhaps life saving surgery. So, it was great but all in all, it was somewhat of a let down in the context of knowing no one but RAP knows what I'm talking about and why the tears just poured out when it got to the part about this stick is 'little sister" and this stick is "you". The Creosote. What would Alice Notley care?

Ahem.

I wonder if this is the company that rebuilt our home that was so badly damaged this summer?

"In July 1993, an Israeli military onslaught in South Lebanon demolished or badly damaged more than 4,700 homes; Jihad al-Binaa restored virtually all of them. Three years later, the Israelis went on an even more destructive rampage that completely or partially destroyed about 7,000 residences; Jihad al-Binaa rebuilt or repaired 6,714. This past summer, Lebanon's wrathful neighbor to the south lost all sense of proportion and damaged or destroyed at least 86,000 homes; Jihad al-Binaa sent some 1,000 engineers and 5,000 volunteers to conduct site surveys (although actual rebuilding has been delayed by the current political impasse in Beirut). Leaving aside questions of right and wrong, what can the Bush administration hope to achieve with an empty statement of hostility toward an organization that has done so much good for so many Lebanese who have suffered so much heartache because of so many bombs and shells supplied by the United States?"

Ah yes. '96 was a great one too. Very hot that summer and the six hour drive to Beirut in the river of refugees then seems just a pale memory and even then, this summer might one day pale as well.

Goodnight Alice Notley.

And I truly did enjoy the reads from Grave of Light. It looks like another success story for you.

"If they were realistic about the war, the American people wouldn't have bought it."

But you know what? The American people don't give a shit. They need to suffer a little more before they can actually develop the ability to be empathetic. Sad but true. Crying and starting blogs about having flights delayed (Jet Blue)....for crying out loud. Americans are not only babies but they are stupid.
